A show is reborn

After last year's automaker pullouts, Detroit's auto show is battling to preserve its place as North America's premier showcase. The extreme press previews of the past are gone. So, too, is the political wrangling that delayed an overdue remodeling of the show's Cobo Center venue. Now, says event Chairman Doug Fox, the show -- like the rest of the industry after the crash of 2009 -- is figuring out ways to do more with less.
