Would Wrangler design tweaks rile the Jeep faithful?

The Wrangler’s hood buckles -- the two exterior straps and clips that keep the hood securely in place -- are just as much a part of Jeep history as its seven-slot grille.
Though I am no Martin Luther, I’d like to nail a note on the door of the Church of the Most Holy Jeep Wrangler.
The design orthodoxy of the Wrangler -- the gospel of Jeep, as it were -- needs a tweak or two before the 71-year-old vehicle’s next makeover.
Now, before the Jeep faithful charge me with ...

Fiat Strada could find a niche in U.S.

Posted 12:38 pm U.S. ET, May 16
DETROIT -- Maybe I'm crazy for even thinking it, but if I could bring one Fiat-based vehicle to the United States that's not yet here, I wouldn't hesitate in my choice:
The Fiat Strada.
I've never driven a Strada and never seen one in person, but the photos I've seen of the Brazilian-built runabout intrigue me. ...

Don't write off the Dodge Grand Caravan just yet

Posted 4:51 pm U.S. ET, May 8
Mark Twain once famously said: "The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated."
According to Chrysler Group, so too have the reports of the death of the Dodge Grand Caravan minivan.
A Bloomberg story last week, which appeared Saturday on autonews.com, quoted a source from Polk who said that 2012 would b ...

Chrysler's tough-guy ad scores parody gold

Posted 12:41 pm U.S. ET, April 20
When does a company know when an advertising campaign has slipped into the sweet spot of popular culture? When it's parodied -- over and over again.
On Thursday night, "30 Rock," NBC's critically acclaimed comedy starring Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin, took its swing at Chrysler's "Halftime in America" Super Bowl spot.

Piecing together the next Liberty -- one clue at a time

Posted 2:07 pm U.S. ET, April 4
DETROIT -- The late, great Johnny Cash once sang about how he had built a car “one piece at a time.” That song has been playing in my head for several months as I try to assemble a mental picture of the vehicle that will replace the Jeep Liberty.
It has been an intriguing deductive exercise, like playing an automotive version of the boa ...

Was 'Cuda lurking in the '60 Minutes' piece on Chrysler?

Posted 1:55 pm U.S. ET, March 26
DETROIT -- Chrysler Group took a star turn in the mainstay of broadcast news Sunday with a lengthy appearance on CBS's "60 Minutes." The piece told a good story and had some intriguing images of Chrysler-Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne as he goes about his multicontinental nonstop work life, even if it broke no new ground.
But the largely puff piece's o ...

Oh, baby! Fiat nurtures continuity, looks forward to fresh start this spring

Posted 3:23 pm U.S. ET, March 23
He might have been seduced by performance, but the bespectacled, latte-sipping actor from Fiat's Super Bowl commercial, "Seduction," seems to have settled down with a less breathtaking model.
In the new TV commercial, "Baby," for the Fiat 500, the actor driving the car, Matthew Rocheleau, is the pedestrian who was seduced in the brand's Super Bowl ...

DETROIT -- It took just 18 months for Chrysler Group to build its 1 millionth 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine.
But at the Detroit auto show, Chrysler-Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne said Chrysler Group now needs to hit that million mark -- plus another 15 to 20 percent -- every 12 months, and is investing heavily in its engine plants to do so.

Forget touch screens, we need KITT

Posted 1:04 pm U.S. ET, Jan. 27
I've test-driven several domestic cars and trucks recently, all of which feature enough state-of-the-art systems and available interactive experiences to bury their headlights in a swirling sea of electrons.
But the deeper I travel into the world of in-vehicle infotainment -- the annoying phrase meant to describe everything electronic going on in a ...

Some perspective on Fiat 500 sales

Posted 4:12 pm U.S. ET, Jan. 4
A friend of mine recently had the grace to point out something that I and much of the rest of the automotive press failed to notice in our rush to pass judgment on the launch of the Fiat 500.
Like a child who finally has grown taller than an elderly relative, the diminutive subcompact has topped the recently discontinued Dodge Caliber in sales in e ...

Why Chrysler's 300 Luxury Series needs Google Translate

Posted 3:27 pm U.S. ET, Dec. 28
I don’t speak Italian.
Like many people, I might be better off if the limits of my conversational Italian were broader than ordering a large specialty coffee and being able to say hello and goodbye with a single word.
But if that were the case, I wouldn’t be so impressed by the cacophony of beautifu ...

Of the production deaths of the Dodge Nitro SUV and the compact hatchback Dodge Caliber, allow me to paraphrase a familiar saw:
"Don't let the door hit ...

Are automakers focused on the wrong beltline?

Posted 3:37 pm U.S. ET, Dec. 7
Automakers around the globe spend millions of dollars on r&d each year to drive extra pounds from their vehicles.
Some have gone so far as to eliminate the spare tire from a number of new models, such as the hot-selling Chevy Cruze and Hyundai Elantra.
But while engineers are removing one spare tire, their cust ...
